Who is eligible?

In order to meet the program requirements for Spain, you need to:

  • Be between 18 and 30 years old
  • Have some child care experience
  • Be a non-smoker and non-drug user. Some families will accept smokers
  • Speak basic conversational Spanish (not mandatory)
  • Have no criminal background

What is the job about ?

Duties and Responsibilities of an Au Pair:

  • The Au Pair will provide approximately 25 hours of childcare and childcare related housekeeping for the Host Family (40 hours if au pair plus)
  • As a member of the family, the Au Pair will be expected to share in the usual household chores along with other family members. Heavy housework is not the responsibility of the Au Pair
  • The Au Pair is to be of assistance to the Host Family and in every way try to fulfill the duties expected
  • Au Pairs are responsible for any personal expenses incurred while living in the home of the Host Family. This would include telephone bills, Spanish lessons, etc

Family's Responsibilities:

  • Accept the Au Pair as a member of the family and not as an employee or boarder
  • Provide the Au Pair with a private room and full board, as well as pocket money of at least 60 Euro per week throughout his or her stay
  • Understands that the primary function of the program is a cultural exchange. As a result, they will allow the Au Pair to attend classes and participate in cultural opportunities
  • Allow two days free per week, usually the weekends
  • Provide two weeks paid vacation for every six months of service

Duration of assignment:

  • Summer stay: 1 up to 3 months
  • School year stay (by the end of May): September through the end of May
  • January/February through the end of May
  • Commit to a 3 (only in summer), 6, 9 or 12-month program. In summer, stays of one to three months are possible. At other times, nine or more months are preferred or being able to stay in Spain until the end of May, regardless of when the Au Pair arrives

Time off:

The Au Pair has two days free per week, usually the weekends and two weeks paid vacation for every six months of service

Pocket money:

  • Au Pair: Euro60 per week (25 hours of childcare per week)
  • Au Pair Plus: Euro90 per week (40 hours of childcare per week)

Registration Fee:

240 Euro, plus 38.40 Euro VAT or 278.40 (or the equivalent in own currency). Payable upon placement and prior to arrival in Spain

Commitment deposit:

There is a commitment deposit of CAD400 (it includes the processing and screening fees; CAD100 refundable)

Au Pair's Expenses:

 

The Au Pair is responsible for her/his own toiletries and entertainment.

How to apply ?

The Application Process:

  • Read the terms and conditions of the program and pay special attention to those specified by our Spanish partner
  • Fill out the Application Form
  • Attach 1 passport size photo, 4 family photos, 4 children photos (the applicant together with children)
  • Attach a “Dear Family” letter, in Spanish, stating why the applicant wants to go to Spain, hobbies, interests, experience with children, any special considerations (such as diet), etc.
  • Attach 2 or 3 references (at least one should be a Childcare reference) in Spanish or English
  • Attach a Medical Report
  • Attach a criminal report check
  • Attach a copy of own driver’s license
  • Attach copies of any degrees, high school diploma or other qualifications such as first aid or Childcare courses
  • Contact us by mail, phone or e-mail to schedule an appointment for an interview

What Happens Next

The application is then sent to our partner in Spain; after that the Au Pair will be contacted with information regarding the status of his/her file
The application will be circulated among Host families that have been selected
Then the Au Pair will begin to receive phone calls from Host Families that are interested in his/her application. The Au Pair may hear from several families before agreeing together with the potential Host Family that they are well suited for each other
Once accepted by a Host Family, The Au Pair will need to make transportation arrangements and communicate them to our office and pay the registration fee
Upon arrival in Spain, the Au pair will be picked up at the airport by the Host Family and be contacted by someone on the staff of the partner agency
The earlier the Au Pair applies the better chances are of placement

 

Orientation:

 

One of our representatives will conduct a thorough orientation with the Au Pair
Our partner in Spain will offer support whilst the Au Pair is there. Upon request, a list with other Au Pairs in the area can be provided

 

Visa:

 

The Au Pair will apply for visa at the Embassy of Spain

 

Travel:

 

The Au Pair normally has to organize and pay for her travel expenses to and from the host country

 

Insurance:

The Au Pair must take out her/his own medical insurance
