What is the job about ?

Duties and Responsibilities of an Au Pair:

  • Awaken the children, dress, bath, feed and play with them
  • Prepare light meals or help to prepare meals, make children's beds, do their laundry, iron their clothes
  • Take the children to and from school, appointments or outings requested by the host family
  • Shop, vacuum, dust and do some other light housework
  • Be at home if necessary while children are absent from school due to illness or holidays
  • Baby-sit in the evenings on request

The Au Pair is not a cleaner or a housemaid. Her/his responsibilities do not include heavy housework unrelated to the children such as cleaning the windows, cleaning the home or polishing

Family's Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the Au Pair's requirement to attend courses for not less than six hours per week or its equivalent at an institution of higher education
  • Provide an appropriate private room and meals for the Au Pair
  • Make available the Au Pair's agreed free time and days off
  • Pay the Au Pair's agreed pocket money each week
  • Treat the Au Pair as an "extended family" member, not as an employee
  • Agree that one or both parents or other responsible adult may remain home during the first two days after the Au Pair's arrival to help in training and acquainting the Au Pair to his/her child care responsibilities, the home and the neighbourhood
  • Understand that an Au Pair cannot have sole responsibility for a child less than 24 months of age
  • Understand that an Au Pair's responsibilities do not include heavy housework unrelated to the children
  • Take care of picking up the Au Pair from the nearest airport/train station/bus station (on arrival and on departure)
  • Pay for the Au Pair blood test on arrival in order to certify the good health should the family find the certificates received non-sufficient

Duration of assignment:

  • Summer stay: 3 months
  • Longer stay: 9 - 12 month

Time off:

The Au Pair has the right to get one whole day off a week, which will be chosen in accordance to the family need. The day off does not necessarily have to be a Sunday, but should include at least a Sunday a month. Other holiday periods will be decided with the host family

Pocket money:

In addition to accommodation and meals, the Au Pair will receive pocket money to be paid weekly

  • For a service of 35 hours a week including 2 nights babysitting the Au Pair will receive 77.00 EURO a week
  • For a service of 40 hours a week (Au Pair plus) including 2 night babysitting the amount due would be 88.00 Euro a week

For full time placements the Au Pair is offered more pocket money, especially when very little children are involved
The Au Pair is provided full board and lodging with the exception of holiday periods in which the Au Pair might be asked to share the room with the children and follow the family

Commitment deposit:

There is a commitment deposit of CAD400 (it includes the processing and screening fees; CAD150 refundable)

Au Pair's Expenses:

The Au Pair should pay for the Language Course. In order to get the student visa the Italian Embassy requires a certificate of enrollment in a language school. The partner agency can provide a certificate because usually the family pays in advance the school fees and then detract the money out of the pocket money
The language school charges around Euro 250 for 12 months if starting in September

How to apply ?

The Application Process:

  • Read the terms and conditions of the program and pay special attention to those specified by our Italian partners
  • Fill out the Application Form
  • Attach a "Dear Family" letter both handwritten and typed
  • Attach non-related 2 Childcare and 1 Character References
  • Contact us by mail, phone or e-mail to schedule an appointment for an interview

What Happens Next

After the interview the application will be reviewed in our office, references checked, and then the Au Pair's complete file is sent to our partner agency in Italy
Once the Au Pair is confirmed acceptance of a placement a fee will be required to be sent to us; the payment will be forfeit if the Au Pair cancels from the program for anything other than a medical emergency
The Au Pair might need to pay a fee at the Italian embassy; the fee is payable directly to the embassy
The Au Pair will make own travel arrangements and will pay all the travel expenses to and from Canada
The earlier the Au Pair applies the better chances are of placement

Orientation:

One of our representatives will conduct a thorough orientation with the Au Pair while still in Canada
Our partner in Italy will send a representative who will personally meet the Au Pair at her arrival and put her in contact with other Au Pairs in the area, give her a map and information on the area

Visa:

For Au Pairs willing to stay in Italy more than 6 months it is important to know that they need a student visa and a medical certificate of good health

Insurance:

The Au Pair should have own private insurance (usually the travel insurance is sufficient for Italy)
The host family will cover insurance costs for small domestic accidents

Travel:

The Au Pair normally has to organize and pay for her travel expenses to and from Italy
