Au Pair in Germany

Who is eligible?


In order to meet the program requirements for Germany, you
need to:
  • Be between 18 and 30 years old
  • Have a basic knowledge of German or a good knowledge of English
  • Be in good health
  • Have experience in looking after children
  • Must be able to attend German classes
  • Have at least a high school certificate
  • Have no criminal background

What is the job about ?

Duties and Responsibilities of an Au Pair:

  • Babysit up to 3 evenings per week
  • Help with general housework
  • Help with childcare
  • Teach English

Family's Responsibilities:

  • Provide meals and accommodation within the home for the Au Pair
  • Make available the Au Pair's agreed free time and days off
  • Pay the Au Pair's agreed pocket money
  • Cover the insurance, visa extension, German language school and public transportation costs for the Au Pair
  • Treat the Au Pair as family member and welcome her/him into family life

Duration of assignment:

  • Longer stay – 12 months or even longer (most German families prefer it)
  • Regular stay - 6 months

Au Pairs for 3 months are more difficult to place

Time off:

1-2 days off per week
4 weeks of paid holiday if Au Pair stays 12 months

Pocket money:

Monthly paid pocket money of Euro205.00-Euro230.00 (please check with our partner before enrolling)
Work 30-35 hours per week (around 5 hours per day and no more than 6)
Monthly paid ticket for public transportation
German language school costs are covered by Au Pair or host family
If the Au Pair stays for 1 year, 4 weeks of paid holidays
Any family outing or travel costs where the Au Pair is invited are covered by host family

Resignation:

There is a period of 2 weeks to resign. The Au Pair might be required to stay until the replacement is coming

Commitment deposit:

There is a commitment deposit of CAD380 (it includes the processing and screening fees; CAD150 refundable)

Au Pair's Expenses:

The Au Pair is responsible for her/his own toiletries and entertainment

How to apply ?

Application Process:

  • Read the terms and conditions of the program
  • Fill out the Application Form
  • Attach Character & Childcare References (they can be either professional or coming from friends or relatives where the Au Pair provided childcare services such as baby-sitting)
  • Attach A "Dear family" letter (write something about herself, her family, her hobbies)
  • Attach pictures to illustrate the file for the host family (the applicant should be present in the picture)
  • Contact us by mail, phone or e-mail to schedule an appointment for an interview

What Happens Next

After the interview the application will be reviewed in our office and then sent to our partner agency in Germany
It takes up to 8 weeks until an Au Pair is placed
The Au Pair receives the contract and an invitation letter by mail
The Au Pair might need to pay a fee at the German embassy; the fee is payable directly to the embassy
The Au Pair will make own travel arrangements and will pay all the travel expenses to and from Canada
The earlier the Au Pair applies the better chances are of placement

Orientation:

One of our partners may conduct a thorough orientation with the Au Pair
Our partner in Germany will offer help and assistance while the Au Pair is there
The Au Pair will be able to contact other Au Pairs near the area where she would be living

Visa:

Au Pair needs to apply for visa at the German Embassy; any cost will be supported by applicant
Au Pair’s visa extension costs while being in Germany are covered by host family

Orientation:

One of our representatives will conduct a thorough orientation with the Au Pair
Our partner in Germany will offer help and assistance while the Au Pair is there
The Au Pair will be able to contact other Au Pairs near the area where she would be living
One of our partner agencies holds between 7 and 8 Au pair meetings per year; the partner agency pays for the over-night stay and the food, except on the longer meetings like Berlin in July

Health, liability and accident insurance:

It is paid by host family (around 35.00 Euro per month)

Travel:

The Au Pair normally has to organize and pay for her travel expenses to and from the host country
